ASICS, also known as Onitsuka Tiger, is a Japanese sporting goods company founded in 1949. It produces footwear mainly for running but also for volleyball, basketball, football, tennis, martial arts, cricket, golf, wrestling, athletics, cross-training, and many other sports disciplines. The name of the company is the acronym of the Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano", variant of the Latin phrase " Mens sana in corpore sano"


Founded in 1949 in Kobe, Japan, by Kihachiro Onitsuka, the company was initially known only as Onitsuka Tiger and produced only basketball shoes. On July 21, 1977, Onitsuka Co.Ltd. it merges with the GTO and JELENK, forming the Asics Corporation. ASICS footwear was introduced in the United States in 1964 under the Tiger brand, thanks to the agreement signed with Onitsuka by Phil Knight, future co-founder of Nike.
